I don’t know about you, but I know a lot of people who don’t travel because they feel they can’t afford it and I mean a lot. Putting aside the fact that you can’t put a price on the amazing experiences that are out there, I have to say that anyone can afford it. There is a country to visit whoever you are, and whatever your budget.
And, while you might not be able to live like a king for a month anymore, there is so much value when you travel abroad. So, if you are looking for a lot more luxury for a lot less money, why not consider Asia for your travels? Here’s my guide to five amazing countries that offer incredible value.
As regular readers of my blog will know, I have so much love for Thailand. And, while it isn’t quite as cheap as it used to be, there are still plenty of bargains to be had. In particular, try Chiang Mai. It’s in the north and doesn’t have the pull of the capital, so far fewer tourists. Hotels are dirt cheap, and you can expect reasonable quality, and the food is tasty and wallet-friendly. Plus, there are so many activities you can try out that cost you a fraction of the price in the west. I have to also add that Thailand is not the cheapest Asian country but it is also one of the most well-developed countries that you can travel around in while on a rather deep budget.
Sri Lanka isn’t without its expensive areas. But if you make your way around the touristy areas and travel a little further afield, you can find bargains galore. The Yala National Park is worth a visit, but will cost a bit more than most other activities. But the trains are cheap, the beaches are free, and there is plenty of food at rock bottom prices.
Malaysia is something of a poor relation to other Asian countries. But it’s a great place, cheap, and very friendly. Even if you explore 5-sta hotel in Kuala Lumpur , you can get some serious value – particularly during the off-season. Penang is worth a look, too. There’s some fantastic architecture to explore, the food is amazing, and trips to the museums cost less than a Starbucks coffee.
The Philippines are not without its problems, especially right now, but make no mistake it is a beautiful country. It’s a big tourist attraction, yet prices seem to stay low and I mean super low. Look out for places like Boracay and Palawan – the scenery is just stunning. Yes, there will be plenty of other tourists whenever you go throughout the year. But it offers breathtaking views for excellent value, and should be on every budget traveler’s bucket list.
It’s amazing how many people in the west have Taiwan-made products in their homes, yet would never dream of visiting. But it might well be worth your while. Taipei is the place to go. It’s vibrant, exciting, and very easy on the wallet. There’s great shopping, too, I hear, so perhaps it’s the perfect Asian destination for those that need a lot of luxury.
