How to Write an About Page!
If you are going to have a blog it is very important that you have an About Page. The about pages if often one of the first places a person will go to aside from the home page on a blog. It is the About page where a person will decide if the blog is worth their time to read or not. So writing a good about page is essential to having a successful blog.
So, here are a few tips to having a successful blog…
Tip Number 1: It’s not really about You!
This is going to sound a bit funny but it’s not really about you. I am sure you are asking, what do you mean its not about you? Its an about page! Yes, I know, but it’s not really about you it’s about your readers.
While I am sure you are an amazing, interesting and wonderful person, bottom line, a visitor to your site wants to know what you can offer them. So, one of the first things your about page should have is the answer to the following question.
What problem does my blog solve for my readers, or, what will a person gain from reading my blog?
Is your blog entertaining, do you have advice to give, tips about something etc… Try to make it very clear why a person should come back to your blog. This should ideally be done in the first couple of sentences.
Tip Number 2: Make it Stick!
So a visitor to your site might have read a post, landed on your Homepage etc… But once you have given a reader a reason to come back to your site or explore further you need to also give them something else to read. By this I mean you need to give them a reason to explore your site even further.
As a blogger, you should also be suggesting other content for a person to read and be linking to other posts or pages on your site. This is called Internal Linking. Your About Page is a great opportunity to link internally to some of your most popular or important content. Try to naturally and smoothly work this content into the About Page and link to it. Internal Linking is something you also want to be doing on almost all of your posts and pages as well.
If someone is on your about page its because they want to know more about the site, what is the sites purpose and to learn more about you. Do not just tell them your life story but give them an opportunity to explore the site further and try to point them in the direction of content you believe will be beneficial to them.
Tip Number 3: Tell The people about Yourself!
A really big part of an About Page is having a picture. Being able to put a face to a name, is a huge part of getting people to be a part of your team. Its a really big part of getting people to know like and trust you. When you are some mysterious figure, yea, you will be able to get some people to like you but I promise you can get even more people when you have a picture up.
Hopefully, you will already have your personality come through in the way that you write and the things that you choose to write about. One thing that is important on the About Page is when you are telling your story. Try to limit your own personal story to the things that are relevant to your blog topic/niche. What parts of your story will help your readers and getting them to read more posts and pages on your blog?
Things like your favorite color, where you grew up etc…, while they might be a part of what makes you who you are, they don’t necessarily belong on your About Page at least not until close to the end. Of course, if they are very interesting and not something that is relatively bland or “normal” then it will make more sense to include them.
Well, those are my tips on writing a good About Page. I hope this helps you on your Blogging Adventure.
